This Week on Mr.Ezzam's class , we were provided with the topic " Breaking The rules".
First , What are rules ?
The answer is quite simple really , rules are regulation meant to be follow and execute.
But the question is , How do we break the rules ?
Do we have to simple follow the rules blindly ? Can we be creative if we have to keep following the rules and not able to decide ourselves ? Can we break the rules just so we can think out of the box and discover new ideas ?
According to Steve jobs , and every artists in the whole world , we often have to break rules , because by doing so we discovered something new , either its a new perspective , new way of thinking or a new experience . Also by the Rule written here , i don't mean the Law , like trespassing , jaywalking , stealing other people's car etc. By breaking the rules , i mean breaking and discovering a way to find another way of thinking on your mind , to step outside your comfort zone and think about weird ideas you've never thought of before ,basically be creative , think extraordinary ,like no one has ever did. And that's exactly the point of Creative thinking class.
Not only the lectures , but the videos posted on the Blackboard also teaches us how to break the rules , it also shows how our brain actually process thoughts and depending on the questions we see , we might react to it fast or slow .I gained lots of knowledge from these videos , especially in discovering the way my brain works and the patterns it show whenever i saw something that caught my eye . Before this class , i might look at something , be interested and just walk away , but now i question and wonder how could something be so eye-catching and if it was my artwork there , what can i do to make it even more interesting.
In my opinion , to actually be able to Break the rules , first we have to break our concept of how things are suppose to be . For example , go explore different cultures , travel alone , do something you usually don't and do not limit what you see and think as it is . Because just by doing those , we gain small ideas that would turn into an inspiration .
I myself realize , that my mind is too stuck up to change the mindset i have now , I'm constantly reminded of how things should be and am weirded out when it's not similar to what's on my mind . Basically i am afraid of changes ,especially when it invades my comfort zone , until my experience in Japan changed me , not 100 % but a little tiny bit of progress counts right ? The moment that help me ponder again upon myself was when i participated an art exhibition at Kochi city , Japan . I thought my drawing is good enough , and people would glance , or even took pictures of it . Never realized how wrong i was until the exhibition day .
The Students didnt even took a pic , nor stop to look at it , and of course i was disappointed . In the end of the day i asked my teachers about it , and they said " I guess its just not good enough , and they did put ours in the back of the hall . But that shouldn't be a problem if your drawing is good . " I also seek opinions from another students and teachers , and from this experience i learned a lot about the cultures , the japanese mindset and preferences etc in the world of Art . . Based on this alone ,i agree that staying out of your comfort zone could inspire and change you , when someone is too afraid to go out and see the real world , i think that is when they are too afraid of breaking the rule that they set for themselves .
( i don't think this has any connection with " Breaking Rules anymore " I'm really sorry )
