Week 6 !! Lateral thinking

This week's topic is Lateral thinking !!
Lateral thinking itself is
According to Wikipedia : a way to solve problems through an indirect and creative approach ,using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only step-by-step logic

According to BB :
Thinking Outside the Box
Ability to think creatively
Involves discarding the obvious
Leaving behind traditional modes of thought
Throwing away preconceptions
Use Inspiration and imagination to solve problems by looking at them from unexpected perpectives
provocation of a new pattern

According to Me : Lateral thinking is a way to think hypothetically which trains the mind to think out of the box and expect what is the unexpected . A way to think out of something or a concept that had been build inside our minds .

Just like this problem we encounter on this week's class .
I myself have a pretty stuck up mind and a straightforward way of thinking , and usually don't bother to look into the details . So when i tried to solve this problem by connecting straight lines that started from the dots (which of course didn't work ) . After Eng Kiet solved it , i was mindblown and for the thousand times i realize that i have to change my way of thinking , I always go by the rules , that is why i thought i couldn't cross over the dots /circles .
I think this is the way De Bono wanted artists or anyone to realize how Lateral thinking works (especially for people with stuck up mind like me ) , We have to think differently and not minimize the potential of solving the problems with rules that we had set up in our mind (which doesn't even apply as a rule to solve this problem ) .

" If you never change your mind , Why have one ?" . I think this is also De Bono's way to "scream" at people who are too afraid to make any changes and are stuck in the same rutinity because of Fear . " People succeeds after countless of Trials and Error " is also what i believe . If we are afraid to think and change our way of thinking , how would we "invent" something revolutionary ? How would someone be successful , if he think the same way as everyone ? If he did , he is either the same ( just another people in the crowd) or everyone is successful . Especially for Designers and Advertisers , Lateral thinking could be a way to success ,  The public loves something different , they DIG unique and new things , because we are always craving for something new to do and experience .
(This passage is not really connected to the one's before and to Lateral Thinking but its my thoughts about this specific quote of De Bono's : )
De Bono said " If you wait for opportunities to occur , you will be one of the crowd ." I think this quote is based on people who fears changes , and the ones who believes in " Fate " rather than actually trying to grab it ( opportunities ) . Opportunity itself wont just come and walk to you , unless you are really lucky (?) . Example is Mary Kay Ash , The founder of Mary Kay cosmetics . She took an opportunity in obstacles . She was denied a promotion and instead of being depressed about it , She took $5000 of her live savings and turned it into one of the largest , most successful multi-level marketing companies ever at a time when female CEOs are rare . This thing dont happen everyday doesn't it ? If she didn't took that opportunity she wouldn't be as successful as now .
( Back on Track )
This is my favorite quote from De Bono . It IS better to have more ideas than to have none at all , even if it turns out as a failure or does not match your taste or whoevers taste who requested it . Because by having more ideas we cover up much more , not to mention one ideas could lead to another which might be successful .
In my POV , i think its also a way to describe people who knows the theory but don't know how to apply them later on in real life . Instead its much better to be able to practice it in real life and show the results rather than being right on other peoples opinions but the results and the words said are way off .
De Bono once said : " Humour is by far the most significant activity of the human brain . "
I agree , especially after seeing some clever and funny ones . Humour makes us think in a whole new way. these are several jokes i got from tumblr which the answers and reactions are pretty unpredictable , yet it is funny and true
WE really become the waiter . Don't we?

It literally is a bowl on a stick ! We just never see it that way before ! Can you imagine someone long long ago , saying something like " You know, since its hard to scoop food using our hand , why don't we attach a little bowl with it !? " And BAM a spoon was invented . They actually used to use a clam shell and carve a spoon using a wood back in the old days .

(googled whether this is actually a word or not just to re-check ) . I think this guy ( the one who answers)

Fun facts of Edward De Bono
Despite being a widely regarded as one of the foremost experts in the fields of creativity and Lateral thinking ,(1) De Bono is also a physician ,psychologist , author , inventor and consultant ! His Nationality is (2)Maltese , which is a Southern European Island Country .He gained a medical degree in the university of Malta. Following this , He proceeded as a Rhodes Scholar to Chris Church , Oxford and (3)earned an MA. He also earned a PhD from Trinity college , (4)BUT despite all of this academic achievements , He was also chose to represent Oxford in Polo and set two canoeing records !
(5)He also advised a UK foreign office committee that the Arab-Israeli conflict might be due , in part , , to low levels of Zinc found in people who eat unleavened bread (pita flatbread). He argued that low zinc levels heightened aggression and suggested shipping out Marmites to compensate !

Innovative Design :

This Dispenser is created for people who have had enough with trying to take out the chios and have it falling on your lap instead , or maybe for someone who has fat hand ( like Me) to be able to slide the chips out easily , it can be really hard to try and grab the chips from inside the can .

Also this week's  a picture  day !!
This week has been quite eventful because we had to do lots of projects outside and my family came to visit me . I snapped several pictures i thought is good for the POTD !! This are several of my favorites this week .
Apparently The Pokemon Go virus has reached SAM ! Saw this in The second floor , just before the Odyssey exhibition . I like how they even put effort on drawing the all so mighty dragonite of his/hers . One could say its a different kind of "Art" you could encounter in an Art gallery .

Marina Mandarin's lobby has got to be one of the hotel lobby i've ever seen so far ! I may not have a good sense in design or architecture but i'm sure that anyone who step into the lobby would be awe-struck by the view !

This is the lobby in a different angle , which i took when i was sitting in a Sofa . I really like the lighting and the effect it gives to the whole inner building ! .

This is the end of this article ! thanks for reading !!

Week 5 , Mindmapping !

This week we learnt mind mapping , which is a process to map out our ideas !Mind mapping usually involves drawing and writing words to form a diagram , with the main topic written in the middle . Mr . Ezzam also said that Mind mapping doesn't focus on what is connected to the main topic , but also the topic we'll come up after brainstorming through the topic .
For Group 3 , we got ( or assumed that ) the topic " Punk " . "Punk " itself is the definition of a rock music genre that is developed from 1974 - 1976 in the States , But what can we link to this word is what they call Mind Mapping .
This is my Thoughts on " Punk " , in a Mind mapping Diagram

Also ! This week has been a  busy one because we have to document and see for ourselves what and How Singapore's night festival look like ! This is my First Night Festival on Singapore and i must say its really Bright and worth the visit !
I LOVE the " Journey " Illumination , But my favorite has got to be the Moon artpiece that is located in SAM . Can't really stay long in each places because Kevin is rushing us to the next location EVERY SINGLE TIME , The place is also really crowded and Lycia cant afford to stay longer due to Time limitations so we just rushed to most of the places .

This is the Map of the Night Fest !

And pics of my favorite artworks !! :
The " Journey " Illumination is
first thing we saw at the Festival ! Very pretty !!

Also this is my favorite illumination , It looks so mysterious and i just love this kind of artwork / style . Epic !! It somehow reminds me of an abandoned clock tower in certain games haha .
This Display is AMAZING . It looks like a Wave but when you see closer its BILLIONS of (pictures of ) Trashes compiled into each other and made this amazing wave -like silhouette !
This piece was showcased along with sea-themed artworks . I believe it represents ( or maybe inspired by ) Deep- sea jellyfishes ? Its really mesmerizing and i love how it glows on the Pitch-black room !
This has got to be my Favorite , It was a vibrant splash of oil colour and it looks like a 360 degree Rainbows ! it was showcased at the room located in corner-left side of the Museum BUT STILL AMAZING .
DOTS DOTS AND DOTS , might not be appealing for people suffering Trypophobia but it looks great to me !
Also The Jumping Man showcase that is located in Front of the National Museum is really cute !! Many people stop by and gathered just to watch it . Kevin got hooked and spent at least 15+ minuted looking at the (Light ) Man jumping over and over again .
Im not sure about this piece but it reminds me of something they use in the Gym . It is made up of wheels and bikes . Unique for sure !
I took this picture in the part of the gallery that features Mr. Lee Kuan Yew , i dont remember what it is but i think its about an established school .

This one is a bicycle booth , by cycling , The kids are able to build energy to start the fan , or blend the juices .
This is an artwork of Mr. Raffles ? ( Im not that sure )
This is a small pathway that are decorated entirely with buckets and straw hats !!
Reminds me of The Legend of Aang *Laughs
But i guess its a diagram that shows the movement of each elements !
This artpiece is a really unique one ! I didnt capture the whole artpiece because its too big but Its actually Singapore , visualized in this cardboards/sterophoam-like boxes . They displayed things that represents Singapore ( Such as Khong-Guans and The Prickly heat Powder ) through the projector and it creates the silhouetes of Buildings .
The Last one is a spot near the Food Corner , Lots of couples gathered here to take pictures . I really like this place because of the light illumination .

That's all for The Night Festival !!

For this weeks a picture a Day , I chose the pictures of Natsu Matsuri Event ( which translates to Summer Festival . This is also my first Singapore Natsu Matsuri so iwas pretty hyped ! Im tired from walking and had feet cramps the day before but i miss the Japan vibe so i visited it with my friend .
I'm not going to post only a picture because i can't choose my Favorites from all this pictures !
This Event is held in the Singapore- Japanese school , which is located near Changi . The School itself is HUGE and has this WIDE backyard .
There is lots of Japanese coming so i took y opportunity to practice my Japanese language . It has been rusty since i went back from Japan a Year ago AND i really miss the vibe of this kind of event .
This is the Yoyo balloon i got from the games !! , Really Bouncy But cute . Figure i has to at least snap a picture of it .
Also i asked for a self-portrait drawing from Tamura Chiho- sensei . Its quite Pricey but i've never had my portrait drawn before . Though it doesn't exactly look like me but its still something worth hanging on my bedroom wall !! She is an illustrator who is working on Singapore right now and is going to held an exhibition later !!

This is the peak of the event where everyone is dancing together ! The Dancing itself is called " Bon-Odori " which literally translates to the Bon-Dance . Me and my friend joined the crowd and danced together . We didn't managed to snap a pic while dancing ,But its really fun and it features some music other than Japanese-ones like Rasa Sayang and Singapore .

This is the venue , and the last picture i took a snap of before going home . I am planning on visiting again . Until Next year !

Week 4 !! Presentation and Creativity !!

This Week , We do presentations in front of the class as a group . Each group was given time to prepare and draw the presentation material , and our group got the theme " 50 ways to use an umbrella " !!
As soon as We received the theme , we brainstormed on several REALLY weird ideas, the kind of thing you wont usually use your umbrella for  (because we have to be creative , remember ? ) , One of the ideas was to whack couples who shows PDA ! !
After several days of preparing , we are finally able to present it in front of the whole class . We were nervous about it but it actually went pretty well in my opinion , though of course we will have to improve for future presentation . I myself am pretty nervous but i overcome the shyness mostly by laughing ( and lame jokes ) .

This is the my favorite picture from all of the presentations , we look so happy together as a group , Lycia got cut out from all of the pictures though .

After the presentation , Mr. Ezzam show us two videos about creativity . The first video starred Tony Faddell , who was a colleague of Steve jobs , and the developer of iPod . In my opinion , Mr . Tony's way of  thinking is revolutionary . In order to design stuff , first we have to notice , is what he said . I believe that it means , in order to design something , first you have to scrutinized the objects to the details , and figure out what is the problem with the object . In his case , he has to make the product loveable and useful for the people , so it would appeal to the market .Also , the way he thinks is very organized in my opinion , i believe he is a Calm thinker , who analyzes more . From this video i realized that Art of designing and thinking creative contributes a lot to the digital market . I personally dont like people who keeps saying that Art is useless , because they really dont know how its being use , It might be hard to find a job , but its not useless.
The other video is a a creativity and Fashion video created by Izacc Mizrahi , He is a man of wonder that gets inspired by anything , either its from mistakes or from the 90s movie ads. He likes toresearch on stuff , so i believe he's a more Active type , he does trials more than analyzing whats going to happen . He has a uniquely chaotic type of thinking which i dont really know but admire .

After watching the video , mr . Ezzam gave us a task to explain where we got ideas from , inside of our room , A position where we get inspired the most . For me , it was when i am laying down with my computer in my bed , opening multiple tabs on the internet and listening to my favorite songs from Bandcamp , because listening to music is the fuel of my imagination . Sometimes watching movie shows from the net also helps boosting my mood and imagination .
I also got several ideas when dreaming , because dreams are anti-mainstream and makes the best fantasy stories , i feel blessed when i dreamt the day before haha .

Also ! For this week 's a picture day a day , This is my entry !!

This is a picture i took at Plaza singapura . Its a picture of KINGSGLAIVE , the latest Final fantasy CG movie ! I am a big fan of the franchise so being able to watch it here is a dream ! It is also my dream to work for square enix  and to be able to contribute something for the game  . I felt especially hyped  and happy when they show my artwork on their video !!
Of course i have to be hardworking
Also my second picture is :
This is a view from my bedroom , and thats a roommate's table . This view always make me feel relaxed and calm , especially after a rough day ! I usually brew a hot cocoa and fell asleep right after drinking it .

Brainstorming !!

         BRAINSTORMING IS
in my opinion :
Spontaneous thinking
Ideas popping
Brain digging
Creative juice flowing
--
Ideas that first comes to Mind
Written in a piece of paper
Brain Reflex
Squeezing minds juice
emptying owns ideas
a way to "teach" our brain to be even more creative
focusing on the quantity of ideas rather than quality
when the brain is calm , its unproductive . When its stormy , its productive

--
Going to add more .

Brainstorming , is a way to develop and learn how to be creative , in a way that stimulates our brain ,forcing us to squeeze our creative juice out . I think this technique , after practiced lots of times , will help us produce more spontaneous ideas , especially when you are required to do so in the future in a limited amount of time .
When there's brainstorming , there will also be mind mapping . Mind mapping it self is a way to write our ideas which is produced from brainstorming . Its a way to channel our thoughts into writing .
Brainstorming is also a way to improve out intuition , and also a way to overcome the cultural barriers we had , as each person comes from a different places and cultural backgrounds.

Example is the Video " Where good ideas come from " by Steven johnson , . He said something about Scientists , How and where their ideas came from , first people would expect them to get their inspiration when they we busy doing experiment alone , but instead this ideas happen at the conference table , where all scientists are sharing their mistakes and brainstormed for ideas together . Another example is when he mentioned about Coffee shops . which is where some of the group ideas came from . Though coffee shops these days are typically portrayed to be a quiet and calming place to just relax , the real coffeeshop ( back in the days) are really chaotic , and at that chaotic moment people claimed they got their inspiration . This proves that brainstorming needs a loud environment , where people ,formed into groups , discuss stuff and write the ideas they spontaneously thought of when engaged with the topic.
This place or space is usually called " Liquid Network ".

The Last Video i saw , which is VISION , doesn't really inspire this article BUT it motivates me to do extra mile for something i love , The video itself is really good , it was my favorite video so far!
I also recommended it via insta and Facebook to everyone .
Thats all for Brainstorming !

A Picture a week !! Challenge

( 1/08/16) Picture 1
From today onwards , we will be doing a picture a week !
This Week's pick is :
The Laskar Bonding day picture !!
Laskar is an indonesian only group that manage by the Indonesian seniors in NAFA . It solely exist for helping freshmens and also creating events so we can get to know each other more and share our experiences .
This particular event took place in Saturday , It's a really memorable day , because instead of completing the objectives we had to complete , we (my group) procrastinated and arrived last . But we also met several problems that made us even more late . After arriving at the last train stop before we reached Marina , we realized on of our team leader is missing . After several attempts contacting her , we are finally able to call her and it turns out she was accompanying a lost child . In the end we didn't make it to the last post BUT it was fun regardless , we also got to ask and hear the seniors experience about NAFA , there's also a Question and Answer session provided for each department !
it was a meaningful experience , and i hope i can attend more events like this .

More pictures :
We saw fireworks blasting in the night sky when we were eating dinner together ! Lovely view .
Saw this helicopter flying at the skies near mbs ! Happy Independence day (soon) Singapore !
